What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine focuses on stimulating the body's inherent healing mechanisms, addressing the root causes of illness rather than just masking symptoms. Unlike some alternative therapies, naturopathic doctors (NDs) are licensed physicians with a rigorous educational background.

NDs complete a four-year accredited naturopathic medical program, gaining expertise in both conventional medicine (including diagnostics and pharmaceuticals) and natural therapies like nutrition, herbal medicine, and mind-body practices. This comprehensive training equips them to provide primary care services.

While some practitioners may call themselves "naturopaths," it's crucial to ensure they hold an ND degree from a reputable four-year program. NDs are licensed in 23 states, 5 Canadian provinces, and several US territories. They undergo rigorous licensing exams, maintain continuing education, and operate within a defined scope of practice set by their jurisdiction.
